This module is part of the Advanced Critical Care Therapeutics Series.

Access in-depth instruction concerning the pharmacotherapeutic management of acute kidney injury, principles of renal replacement therapy and concepts of medication dosing in renal dysfunction. Didactic knowledge of the etiology, pathophysiology and drug therapy management of acute kidney injury will be provided. We’ll also discuss principles of renal replacement therapy and their effect on medication dosing, and you’ll learn about general concepts regarding dosing medications in patients with both acute and chronic renal function. Following completion of this CE topic, participants will have the most up-to-date information concerning acute kidney injury, renal replacement therapy, and medication dosing in renal dysfunction.

Objectives 

  • Define acute kidney injury (AKI)
  • Recognize risk factors for the development of AKI
  • Discuss strategies to prevent and treat AKI
  • Identify renal replacement therapies (RRT)
  • Recognize and use equations to estimate renal function
  • List commonly used ICU medications that require dose adjustments with decreased renal function
  • Adjust medication doses and frequencies in the setting of changing renal function
