Purpose

This course is designed to provide the practicing colon and rectal surgeon with updates on important aspects of caring for patients with colon and rectal diseases. Emphasis is placed on a broad range of topics to address the needs of a diversified group of conditions.

Objectives

  • Analyze current evidence supporting colonoscopy surveillance practices and apply evidence-based guidelines to patient care.
  • Evaluate surgical techniques for familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and their impact on quality of life and postoperative surveillance.
  • Identify the symptoms of low anterior syndrome and implement effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
  • Assess strategies for fostering multi-institutional collaboration to develop and sustain a global fellowship program.
  • Develop a systematic approach to the diagnosis, classification, and surgical management of rectourethral fistulas.
  • Compare benefits and challenges of left- and right-sided intracorporeal anastomosis and incorporate surgical techniques to optimize outcomes.
  • Determine appropriate indications and techniques for parastomal hernia repair to enhance surgical success.
  • Discuss advancements in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and its role in colorectal cancer management.
  • Integrate a gynecologic oncology approach to diagnose and treat genital HPV dysplasia.
  • Design management protocols for HPV-related perianal dysplasia in immunocompetent female patients.
  • Formulate comprehensive treatment plans for managing fecal incontinence, focusing on patient quality of life.
  • Evaluate surgical indications and refine technical approaches for treating diverticulitis.
  • Address common pelvic floor disorders and their management in the scope of colorectal surgery practice.
  • Explore the psychological and professional impact of complications in colorectal surgery on surgeon well-being.
  • Adapt surgical strategies for Crohn’s disease patients undergoing biologic therapy.
  • Implement strategies to improve surgeons' physical and nutritional health to enhance overall well-being.
  • Develop effective educational strategies within time-restricted work schedules in surgical training programs.
  • Apply transanal surgical techniques for the management of early-stage rectal cancers.
  • Facilitate shared decision-making processes with patients considering a nonoperative "watch and wait" approach for rectal cancer.
  • Develop updated surveillance protocols for patients with a near-complete response following rectal cancer treatment.
  • Assess indications, techniques, and outcomes of lateral lymph node dissection in rectal cancer management.
  • Address sexual dysfunction and quality-of-life concerns in women undergoing rectal cancer treatment.
