Description

This hands-on workshop helps health professions educators and researchers strengthen skills in qualitative and mixed methods research. Learn to refine research questions, collect high-quality data, and apply rigorous analysis techniques, including thematic and focus group analysis. The session also introduces mixed methods approaches to advance impactful education research.

Timothy C. Guetterman, PhD, is a faculty member in the Mixed Methods Program at the University of Michigan and an applied research methodologist specializing in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research. He conducts NIH-funded health services research, has extensive experience in program evaluation and research methods education, co-authored multiple editions of Educational Research with John W. Creswell, and serves as Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research.

Objectives

    • Develop focused qualitative and mixed methods research aims and questions
    • Strengthen skills in qualitative data collection using interviews, focus groups, observations, and other approaches such as image analysis and photo elicitation.
    • Apply rigorous qualitative analysis techniques, including thematic analysis, focus group analysis, and case‑based analytic approaches relevant to health professions education.
    • Describe the application of mixed methods designs to enhance the rigor and impact of research in health professions education.
