20th Annual Addressing Health Disparities Seminar
Diabetes Mellitus, a Public Health Problem
The goal of the conference is to increase knowledge, skills, and ability of individuals in academia, health professionals and community members in addressing health disparities as it relates to more effectively and humanistically address diabetes mellitus and related conditions.

Objectives
- Describe the use of technology in diabetes management.
- Understand team approaches to addressing diabetes.
- Detail health justice (equity and more) needs in addressing diabetes.
- Explain structural barriers to treatment, and strategies for addressing those challenges.
- Understand how Community Health Workers (CHWs) can address diabetes.
Keynote Speaker
Anna Norton, MS
Former CEO of Diabetes Sisters,
Immediate Past President of Center for Sustainable Healthcare Quality and Equity
Anna Norton, MS, is dedicated to improving the well-being of those living with diabetes through education and peer support communities. For over 25 years, Ms. Norton has been an advocate, fundraiser, speaker, and leader, organizing national conferences and leadership programs, creating bilingual health outreach programs, spearheading health equity programs, and authoring research articles on diabetes health. She has been featured in an assortment of health-related magazines and books, including Balancing Pregnancy with Pre-Existing Diabetes, A Woman’s Guide to Diabetes: A Path to Wellness, and Diabetic Living.
She served as the CEO of DiabetesSisters, a national nonprofit focused on providing support and education for women living with diabetes and is the immediate past President of the Center for Sustainable Healthcare Quality and Equity at the National Minority Quality Forum.
Ms. Norton graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida and Master of Science in Education at Florida International University.
A proud Latina, she currently resides in the Chicago-area with her husband and teenage son; she has lived with type 1 diabetes since 1993.
