What is the CFP Capstone Course?
The CFP Capstone is a required financial planning course designed to help candidates demonstrate their ability to deliver professional financial planning services. It covers financial planning processes, ethics, communication, counseling, and the application of financial planning knowledge. The course culminates in a final project—developing and presenting a comprehensive financial plan.
Who should take this course?

What are the prerequisites for enrolling?
To enroll, you must hold an advanced degree (in any discipline), qualify for the Accelerated Path OR have completed the CFP Introductory course (which consists of seven online modules).
What is the difference between the Capstone and the Introductory Course?
The CFP Introductory Course consists of seven online modules and is required for those who do not qualify for the Accelerated Path. The CFP Capstone Course is the final financial planning development course that all CFP candidates must complete. If you have a master’s degree, you can bypass the Introductory Course and take just the Capstone.
What is the CFP Board’s Accelerated Path, and do I qualify?
The Accelerated Path allows professionals with advanced degrees or designations to bypass most education requirements. You qualify if you hold a master’s degree, law degree, Ph.D., or one of the following designations:
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®)
- Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®)
- Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®)
- CFP® certification from outside the U.S.
